Two distinctly American Christmas carols, one expanded upon by folklorist John Jacob Niles after hearing three lines sung by an Appalachian child in 1933.

The origins of the other, according to Phillip Roth: “God gave Moses the 10 Commandments. Then he gave Irving Berlin ‘White Christmas.'”
